Muskoka Ontario is an area less than two hours north
of Toronto that has over 1600 lakes, famous granite cliffs, and
spectacular waterfalls. With dense forests of pine and maple trees, the
fall leafage is spectacular, and a draw for visitors and naturalists
from around the world.
With just over 50,000 year round residents, much of the Muskoka area is
uninhabited. Seasonal residents and tourists spend the warmer months in
the area, but even then a person can camp, fish, and hike and not see
another person for some time.
World famous untouched wilderness and unspoiled rivers and lakes make
for fabulous fishing. Best known fishing areas are
Lake Muskoka,
Lake Rosseau and
Lake Joseph. These lakes are large and are interconnecting
bodies of water that can be in some places over 300 feet deep.
Known as the Muskoka District, or simply as the Muskokas, the region
encompasses 2500 square miles. The size of many small countries and the
region is bordered by the world famous Algonquin Provincial Park, known
for its unspoiled wilderness. To the west is Georgian Bay, the gate to
the Great Lakes.
Many people come to the area for its fishing and to many it is
considered the best in the area, perhaps some of the best fresh water
fishing in Canada. In the Muskokas, anglers can find small mouth bass,
northern pike, largemouth bass, lake trout, rock bass, walleye, white
fish, and yellow perch.
There is literally something for everyone to do in the Muskoka District.
With quaint villages and towns spread around the 1600 lakes you can find
artisan shops, plenty of history, golf, wonderful theatre productions,
fishing, golf, hiking, cycling, and just about any other outdoor
activity you can think of.
With many picturesque restaurant locations, the entertainment is also
quite good as many artists and musicians come to the
Muskokas to enjoy a
quieter, simpler lifestyle. Informally called Ontario’s cottage country,
many compare the area to the lakes district in England, although the
Muskokas have way more lakes!
